The kingdome of Lho, Lho-Manthang (Mustang) is a fascinating old village situated at 3780m to the behind of main Nepalese Himalayan range of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It has centuries old dozens of monasteries and gompas, unique complex of culture and tradition. Arid, pink or brown fields, the less productive soil; just few crops like potatoes, buckwheat, oat etc. grown; people’s main trade is farming and domestic animal keeping.
Just 15 minutes from Pokhara by plane to Jomsom (2830m.) and then on foot into the Himalayan rain shadow, trekking in Mustang is possible on year around, monsoon is even more enchanting. The flight is not just the most spectacular on earth as the tiny plane flies up the Kali Gandaki(river) between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It is also a journey into a whole different world.
Especial trek permit is required and only group trekkers (not less than two people) are permitted to trek. A hefty amount of royalty is to be paid for the permits. Many people initially think the royalty is unnecessarily expensive but once they enter here to trek, they repeatedly advise to their trek guides and government authorities the royalty should increase for this incredible place.
The trek to Lho-Manthang is four days from Jomsom and four days back via more or less the same route. The normal route starts from Kagbeni 2810m, and is mostly flat, but involves wading across streams. The magnificent Kali Gandaki (river) keeps you company for the first two days.
From Kagbeni to Samar(6.5 hrs, 3290m), Samar to Ghemi(7.5 hrs, 3441m), Ghemi to Lo-Manthang (7 hrs).
The village Chele village is a beautiful little town nestled right above the river which boasts of glorious views of the iligiri and Tilicho peaks. Like wise another village enroute is Ghemi. This village has been situated amidst amazing blue and red cliff faces that are typical of sedimentary rocks of the trans-Himalaya. Tsarang village has its gompa which dominates the settlement. Nere here there is a five story Tibetan style fortress, is one of the good expamplatory architecture of Mustang.
Spend 1 ~ 2 days at Lo-Manthan enjoying to visit surrounding villages.
Then its time to retrace the route back to Jomsom, and take another look at the magnificent landspaces, the sweeping vistas and the dramatic cloud-spaces that you rushed past on the way up.
